BIOGRAPHY

Dynamic and versatile painter Paul Wright hails from Leicester, where he continues to live and make work. Thompson's Gallery first encountered Paul at the National Gallery in the BP Portrait Award in 2006, and have been showing his works ever since.

Wright's formal training was in Illustration, and his transition to oil painting and all that came after was an eventual and experimental path. The artist began doing portraits of colleagues and friends in a Howson-inspired style, and soon after moved on to a bolder, more painterly method with excellent results. Only a few years later he sat with renowned poet Simon Armitage OBE to paint his likeness, the very portrait that would bring him to the National Gallery for the BP Award.

Wright was selected again for the BP Portrait Award in 2014, and this second time made the shortlist. By this point the artist had also seen major success in solo exhibitions across the UK and gained greater exposure through multiple art fairs.

Two books have been published on Wright and his practice, including the most recent 2016 monograph titled 'Fifteen Years', an accompaniment to his solo exhibition of the same title. The book and show offered a reflection over Wright's career to date, and a consideration of the things to come as his practice expands. Whether using oil paint, ink on paper, or printing monotypes, Paul Wright continues to surprise and delight.
