15 April 2017 - 30 April 2022

Painter, printmaker, designer of stained-glass windows and theatre sets, Piper settled in a small hamlet on the edge of the Chilterns and proceeded to produce work, which placed him centre stage in the cultural landscape of twentieth century art.
Piper’s overriding fascination was vernacular and ecclesiastical architecture - Abbeys, churches, houses, castles and details of architectural design were frequent subjects for his work.
He travelled far around Britain and Europe working with quick control to produce richly textured images with romantic combinations of colour and calligraphic lines.
Piper had strong associations with East Anglia and Aldeburgh, where a fond friendship with Benjamin Britten lead him to design almost all of Britten’s stage sets.
