Ian's emergence as a contemporary realist painter is a fairly recent one but has been a long time in development. Early promise at school was followed by a degree in design from Sheffield Hallam University which was supplemented by chalk & charcoal pavement drawings. A subsequent career in art for Ian followed as a successful greeting card artist & his move to fine art & the realist style he now enjoys has been a natural progression.
In using his chosen medium of pastel Ian creates his highly detailed paintings, paying particular attention to the imperfections, textures & highlights found in otherwise ordinary everyday subjects. The crisp shine on an egg yolk or the subtlety of a burnt crust are crafted with both precision & imagination to help create Ian's bold & intriguing images.
Recently Ian has been a frequent exhibitor at the Pastel Society Exhibitions at the Mall Galleries, London where he was awarded both the West Design-Faber Castell Award & the Visitors' Choice Award for his "Cheese On Toast" in 2018. Following on from this he again was awarded the Visitors' Choice Award for "Blueberry Ice Cream" in 2019.
